Rosemary Sulaiman and her family were still awaiting the arrival of their daughter, and it soon became apparent that little Miss Sulaiman was not coming home with them until the following summer. The authorities had spent an enormous amount of time searching for her. It became clear that she had died within days of her abduction, for the killer had removed her body from the house and left it to decay in the forest.

The Sulaiman family never suspected that anything had happened to their tiny girl as the killer had disappeared from the family home after the abduction, and had never heard from her again. Her family assumed she had drowned or run away. But the case now came to light after a man came across a burnt letter that had been sent to Miss Sulaiman’s family. In it, the killer had written to say she was with him, and to say he had left the family without telling them what he had done. His motives are never officially established.

Despite the murder itself being in January 1941, the Sulaiman Family never thought the killer had escaped their clutches. The case remained unsolved for more than five decades.

The case was featured on the British television show, Dateline Britain from October 5, 2009.

The case of Susan Stride was the subject of the BBC’s crime documentary “Blood for Bread”.
